Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Samarkand offers families a perfect blend of history, culture, and interactive experiences. I recommend to begin your trip at the magnificent Registan Square, arriving early to beat the crowds as children marvel at the three grand madrasahs with their towering blue domes and intricate mosaics. There are stands where children can rent various costumes and pose and take pictures against the incredible backdrop of the colorful mosaics - this was one of the highlights of our trip.
After exploring these architectural wonders, enjoy a family lunch featuring child-friendly Uzbek specialties like plov (rice pilaf) and shashlik (grilled meat skewers) at a nearby restaurant. I also recommend visiting the impressive Bibi-Khanym Mosque before wandering through the vibrant Siab Bazaar, where children can sample dried fruits, nuts, and traditional sweets while experiencing local daily life. We bought hand made traditional hats there which make for great souvenirs.
